The Elephant - Fish

Here is a small collection of some of the fish the specialists caught in the Mara River. Check out the second fish from the top...he's got a trunk just like an Elephant.

The fish with the "trunk", is this the same species as the others shown? If so, could this be some sort of deformity due to polution in the water?

Also, where is your Camp located?

Nope, it is a different species. I can't recall the name right now. It is actually known as a "Trunk Fish".

We don't have a camp in the Masai Mara. We live in Narok and travel throughout the Basin on a weekly basis to sample at all of our different sites.

The fish with the trunk is a Mormyrid or elephant fish. The rest are known as Barbus altianalis. They are related to the carp
